Perhaps somewhat intimidating from the outside, but glad I decided to take the chance as there is a nice atmosphere inside. Seven hand pulls at the bar with six of those clipped for ale at the time of my visit in March; the remaining hand pull had a load of cider clips attached to it, advertising what is on offer, presumably bag in a box. I had a half of Brimstage Oyster Catcher Stout at £2.30 for a half, and this was very nice. Other ales available at the time were Oakham Citra, White Rat, Wigan Brewhouse California, Rev James and Fyne Ales Hurricane Jack. This pub uses the Real Ale Finder app, so you can see what will be available before you enter.
The pub is squeaky clean, absolutely spotless. In fact the tables and banquette seating are almost slippery in how well polished they are.
There is a long main seating area in front of the bar with a slightly sectioned off front room. A large projector screen was showing muted cricket at the opposite end the room. It looks like this space may originally have had a huge fireplace. TVs in the front room and above the entrance door were showing horse racing. The floor consists of bare boards. The ceiling looks old with decorative plasterwork / cornicing worth a look.
There is a step up to the rear section, where the toilets and a rear seating room can be found. The place has a sloping floor to rival the Marble Arch in Manchester! Toilets are fairly basic but not unpleasant.
Very glad I came in and I would definitely be happy to return.

The Vernon Arms is a long and thin bare board floored pub with a small raised seating area to the left that is screened from the entrance up the right. The long serving counter runs up the left-hand wall where it faces banquettes up the right-hand wall. In the rear on the way to the toilets is a room with more banquettes, which I imagine comes into its own when the pub is busy because there’s a lot of standing room in the bar area. The seven hand pumps were drawing three real ciders alongside Brimstage Brewery’s Oyster Catcher, Ossett’s White Rat, Off Piste and a decent Brains Rev James. Premium keg and Carling were also available from the polite barman. This is a decent pub so I was surprised to be one of only three people in attendance listening to the background music on a recent Monday evening when lesser pubs in the area were busier.

A long roomed traditional corner pub with a locals feel to it, seven handpumps offered up six cask beers and one Cider, beers were Coach House Gunpowder, Kirkstall Dissolution IPA, Salopian Oracle, Brains The Rev James, Ossett White Rat and Black Edge Citra , my choice, the Cider was Gwynt Y Ddraig Black Dragon. A nice beer selection and top pub.
