An attractive and traditional looking pub in this very pleasant village, there were plenty of picnic benches out the front which was a decent spot to sit and enjoy the sun. Internally it’s quite traditional too, although I thought all the strings of pride flags, both inside and out, were a bit OTT and not really in keeping with a genteel village. There were even bar runners advertising Brooklyn Stonewall IPA.
Décor wise there was a mixture of dark wooden boards and quarry style tiling on the floor, whilst the walls had been painted either deep blue or a pale taupe shade. One room was quite cosy with a built-in black bookcase on one wall that almost looked as though it could have been an original feature, and there were a few wooden beams on the ceiling. Another room had a piano, a couple of old armchairs and a stone fireplace with an old clock on the mantlepiece that looked as through it could have been an elderly relative’s sitting room, although having the fire lit during the current heatwave seemed an odd choice. I even mentioned this to the barman who said it hadn’t seemed so hot earlier in the day. Another room was a little more contemporary perhaps with a taupe paint throughout, a large stone chimney breast with a cuckoo clock and a few random pictures scattered around the walls.
Beers on tap were Hartington IPA, Sharp’s Sea Fury, Whim Red House and Boddington’s. Ciders meanwhile were Inch’s medium Apple and Old Mout Berries & Cherries. Prices seemed very expensive though, with two small soft drinks coming in at £7, more than double what I had paid elsewhere the day before.

The room on the right was closed for a private meeting, but I caught a glimpse of two hand pumps through the window, and when I went through the door on the left as instructed there were two different beers on. I asked the server what the beers in the other room were, and she very kindly photographed the pump clips for me. I ended up with both of them, after my half of Boddingtons revived cask bitter proved to be end-of-barrel. Locally brewed Whim Magic Mushroom Mild 3.8% was priced at £6.50/pint while the Timothy Taylor Golden Best was an equally surprising £4.80/pint, considering how expensive that brewery's beers often are. Both were very good (NBSS 4), which wipes out all previous quibbles about prices and cloudiness. I've been meaning to come here since my daughter had Christmas dinner in this pub with her partner and my grandson, a toddler, and they enjoyed it very much.

Nice pub with friendly staff. Two rooms with decent real ale - Titanic Plum Porter was on offer. Also a nice fire in the grate.
