A basic, no frills boozer just off the North Street strip, it has nonetheless had something of a makeover as I recall from my previous visit many years ago, and it now has a lighter, more contemporary look than the dark and dingy pub that I recall, although little in the way of any character. Landlady was friendly enough, although it’s a shame they didn’t take a little more care washing the glasses. Mine didn’t look too clean at all, with plenty of lipstick around the rim.
It’s a single room, open plan pub with a large central bar counter, flanked at each corner by whitewashed brick pillars. The floor is sanded wooden boards whilst the paintwork is a mixture of cream and khaki green. A number of colourful, music related murals were on the wall and these included a montage of musicians such as Blondie, Ozzy and Motorhead. Seating was a mixture of brown, leatherette banquette seating around much of the perimeter, regular chairs and high stools at the bar. A pool table was at one end of the pub whilst a plasma screen was showing a music channel.
The solitary beer on tap was Doom Bar, although ciders were better represented with Thatcher’s Gold, Blackthorn and Natch. Two pints costs a very reasonable £4.60.
