A sign beside the door promised "great cask ales", but I wasn't fooled, I knew it was a Marstons pub, so wasn't surprised to see four beers from their stable on the bar. These were Pedigree, Hobgoblin, Hobgoblin Gold and Wainwright. I went for the weakest, as I was cycling and still had to get into Derby for my train home. To be fair, the beer was in very good condition. The family who run the pub were very friendly - they were having a birthday party, which the grandchildren were seemingly enjoying rather more than their grandmother, whose birthday it was - and made a point of looking after their customers while trying to keep the children from bouncing off the walls. The pub is handily placed for cyclists, being at the top of a seriously hard hill, with the prospect of a much easier run-in to come. Certainly one I'll keep in mind for when I'm next in these parts.
