In the badlands of run-down St Judes, this basic ale house is a beacon in the desert. The A-board outside with some wittering about ‘fascists’ just made me think of Nicola from the brilliant Mike Leigh film Life Is Sweet. Anyway the interior is a classic combo of wood, red and cream shades, a dart board and traditional seating. Four cask on, my Good Chemistry Time Lapse was excellent (NBSS 4) fruity and tasty. Cider of course, is also available as were some crafty choices. Just as we got our pints, Kraftwerk was plopped on the record player. I liked it here, understated and off the beaten track a bit to keep the crowds away. 7.5

The very definition of a working class ,street corner boozer in an unpromising part of the City. It's a small single room ,with bar to the left and toilet doors to the rear.Bar stolls are popular with the friendly locals ,with one reserved for the pub cat. There was banter from the two black female pub owners with the locals about this cat with care being made to avoid any Mrs Slocombe references.
The TV was tuned to Euro Championship footie ,and the darts throw would have obscured the action if anyone wanted to play.At the bar there were an array of handpumps but just two clipped with Draught Bass.On ordering a pint, the friendly barmaid explained it was on stillage only and asked me to try it first in case it was off.Flat as a pancake but drinkable with no after affects,it would appear that this is the single real ale option.
A loyal band of regulars seem to keep this place going,it may be a case of use it or loose it and if you want to get a feel how pub were in the 60's and 70's ,this is a boozer worth popping in for a pint.
