This historic pub beside the quay has been thoroughly modernised, both inside and out, and is now understandably food led given its relatively remote location. There are three main seating / dining areas around the central servery, all with light furniture and decor, and a gravel beer garden can also found at the front. Unusually, all four beers were provide by the local Canterbury Ales: Kentish Best, The Pardoner's, The Friar's and the seasonal green hopped Green & Pale (in great shape).

When I last came here (25 years ago) this 17th Century pub was an atmospheric Shepherd and Neame pub whose USP was 100 different whiskies – they gave you a t-shirt once you'd sampled them all. Now it has been completely gutted and turned into a modern eatery part of the adjacent marina. There is a large waterside garden in front of the picturesque Victorian facade. It's now a freehouse with a caskmarque sign, an open plan L-shaped bar serving formulaic food with contrived nautical titles: 'Bosuns Menu', 'Ships Pizza', 'Admirals Breakfast', and not an apostrophe in sight. There were overpriced designer nibbles served by apathetic juvenile staff. Four ales on, I had Old Dairy's Red Top which (though it may have been subliminal) tasty slightly milky. It was a disappointing visit to what has become a bit of a pub parody, and while I'd be perfectly happy to drink here if arriving by boat, I can't see my bothering to drive out all this way when there are better pubs around.
