A traditional looking, stone-built pub just by the bridge over the river on the periphery of the town centre, I was initially a little disappointed on entering, although it’s difficult to put my finger on exactly why. Perhaps all the flags strung around the place for the world cup didn’t really help. Somehow it just had a bit of a downmarket feel to it, and it wasn’t really what I was expecting.
Décor wise it’s quite traditional with old flagstones on the floor, plenty of beams on the ceiling and some small areas of exposed stone walling, as well as a stone chimney breast with a wood burning stove, although the TV screen mounted above it spoilt the effect somewhat, and despite all the football flags was showing a TV soap. Other than that the walls and ceiling were mostly just whitewashed, although there was also some wood panelling on the lower part of the walls that had been painted a very pale green. Down a couple of steps to the left was another room that looked to be more geared up for dining and this led out in to a garden. The menu offered a basic pub grub selection, and my lasagne was perfectly adequate, if nothing spectacular.
Beers on tap were Timothy Taylor Landlord, Boddingtons and Abbot Ale. The solitary cider meanwhile was Inch’s Medium Apple.

Recent visits have been a let down after my enthusiastic review of 2017. There are still multiple hand pumps but just GK IPA and Abbot available. My pint of Abbot was as good as it gets but £5:40 is not a price I'm enthusiastic about paying. I was the only customer at just gone 11am, but there was plenty of intrusive background music to keep me entertained.

I suspect this pub has been altered since the last review in 2017, but I found it very food-oriented, with the only drinking area as such being a small section around the bar with posing tables. It seemed to be popular with diners, however. Four cask beers on the bar, from which I had Abbot, which was in decent condition but rather pricey at £4.84.
