I read that this pub had won the local pub of the year for CAMRA's northwest Wales branch, and it is certainly good that the beer quality has received recognition, but on a quiet Monday evening it was disconcerting that the couple who run the pub kept on vacating the bar and going through a door to their living quarters, having to be summoned by a bell when anyone required serving. On the other hand, when they were there they were friendly and welcoming, and were happy to charge my phone while I drank pints of the two beers on. The third pump was awaiting an uptick in trade after a quiet Monday, when Purple Moose Dark Side would make an appearance. The Wye Valley HPA reached the end of the barrel soon after my (NBSS 4) pint was poured, but my first pint had been the very good Kettle Drum Best Bitter, also a 4 (both beers were £4.50/pint), and I only switched because I wanted to see if the HPA was equally good, and it was. This is my first visit to this part of Wales, and I hope to return, and will certainly call in here when I do.
