This is a detached pub and eatery, with patio area. It is a 1950s looking pub, built as a part of the 1930-50s rapid estate building in the area. The pub is dominated by two large gables in white brick, with a steep pitched roof that has dormers. It gives the slightest nod to the Tudors. The interior is a large, open L-shaped room. It has two parts, a smaller, more 'bar' area off to the left and a foody area around to the right. It is in red patterned wallpaper and yellow, with red patterned carpet and white ceiling. It has several TVs, showing general stuff and the music was via a jukebox and at a decent level. The menu is basic. Some trophies and old photos are in the bar, while the foody area has more arty art on the walls. There is a pull down screen facility. There are dart boards at either end and a pool table in the foody bit. The service was OK and a few regulars seemed to be in. Beer; usual tap stuff with M&B MILD. There were 4 handpulls, but all had GK IPA clips - it was kept well enough - just not the most exciting. A run-of-the-mill place, with the pub games. Happy enough to have stopped by.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Hillyfields

For a brief period in the mid-1980s, the Hillyfields was my local (although I didn't visit very often as the beer wasn't up to much). Finding myself in Harborne again decades later, I thought about a re-visit with some trepidation as so many 'suburban' community pubs such as this have become run down (where they haven't closed altogether). Therefore, I was cheered to see that the exterior looked quite smart as I approached, and this impression was reinforced on stepping through the front door. The interior layout seems much the same - with a substantial main bar to the right and a smaller bar to the left - but the decor and furniture had been substantially refurbished in plain but not unattractive style. There is now quite a reasonable looking 'cheap and cheerful' menu and even a dining area at the far end of the main room. There are several handpumps, all with Marston's EPA clips, but the beer proved to be in good condition and excellent value at £1.79 (and served in the right glass too). Overall, the atmosphere seemed busy but welcoming and altogether more family-friendly than I recalled. A very pleasant surprise.
