This is a substantial roadhouse pub dating from the 1930s, named after the River Evenlode.
I visited here once before in 1988 and can’t remember a thing about it, but do remember that due to the traffic, it took an absolute age to get the car out of the car park.

This has now re-opened as a 'freehouse', however, an ale line-up of Brakspear Bitter, Wychwood Hobgoblin, Jennings Cumberland and Hop Commotion (along with 'Evenlode Ale') gives more than a hint of who's in charge here. The place has been smartened up immensely and there's a greater preponderance on food as you would imagine (some of the offerings which looked more than tempting). My Hop Commotion was in excellent shape and the service was polite and courteous. A injection of life into this place was much needed, and your visit will be much based on whether you are a fan of the brewer and its cohorts.

Food rants aside, this is a large building set back from the busy A40 on the outskirts of Eynsham village, which seems a lot smaller upon entry. The main bar area is a narrow, rectangular affair all a bit of a mish-mash with carpeted floor (tiled at the bar), some exposed beams, a faux-exposed stone fireplace, a predominantly purple colour scheme, a claw crane machine and framed pithy comments (the tired old 'A woman drove me to drink, etc.') There's lots of food related ephemera lying around (condiments, cutlery, as well as bar snacks in wicker baskets actually on the bar), and there were two ales on - Brakspear Bitter and Hobgoblin (I didn't bother) - with two pumps unclipped. A TV screen blasted out contemporary R&B from some satellite channel and the seating was a mix of leather-bound wooden chairs and mini armchairs and sofas. The restaurant is through a door and located behind the bar. The carvery is decent enough value at £5.45, and there's plenty of fanfare about their dry offerings outside in order to tempt the passing trade.
