Three cask offering, TT LL which is a long running staple here, Butcombe Original and Henry Weston’s cider. Keg offering quite limited as Aspall, Guinness, Asahi, Madri, Pravda, Peroni and Neck Oil.
This is a proper old establishment on the upper part of Caerphilly Mountain and popular. People head here as a destination. Understand that is in good part due to its reputation as a food pub. There are some seats outside that are hugely popular in the better weather part of the year. Inside the loveliest part of the pub are the four tables on the ancient flagstone floor just inside the entrance. If you are lucky this time of the year to bag either of the two 2-person tables on the left of the entrance each with a couple of leather armchairs, then you have scored as they sit by a large fire grate that will have a fire roaring away until close to closing. Almost as good are the two small round tables to the right of the entrance with bucket armchairs. The bar counter is beyond this space and is a long light wood fronted affair in a tiled area. A few tables are opposite the bar. To the right there is a raised seating area in a small carpeted room with tables laid for diners and before you reach that a small snug up a step or two to the right of it, it having its own fire grate but not lit on my visit and which can also be accessed to the immediate left of the entrance. To the left of the bar is a largely dining area that opens out to its left and right, this area all carpeted. Plenty of low ceilings and beams here and mind your head signs. The venue has been refurbed in recent years, and it has probably lost a little of its unspoilt charm, but it is still a very worthwhile destination if in the area.
