Called in for a pre-match pint before a game at Kiveton Park's Hard Lane ground. Unfortunately called off because of a frozen pitch, but a beer here is some recompense. This is a lovely traditional pub, directly opposite the church, with a modernised interior but still some semblance of separate rooms. The bar counter is a modern affair made of rough planks, but the four hand pumps (three and then one) suggest that cask beers are popular. The three guys in front of me were all on John Smiths Smooth. With a choice if Moonshine, Landlord, Farmers Belgian Blue and Old Peculier, you would have to hold a gun to my head before I would drink John Smiths. My halves of the Abbeydale and Theakston were around NBSS 3, with the pale beer better than the dark. I wouldn't mind calling in again next time a match at Hard Lane beckons.

Called in for Sunday lunch, and although there was Camerons Strongarm available it was not in good condition and had to be returned. No problem. It was a shame really as this pub ticked so many boxes for me, but if the clientele is not drinking real ale, it will suffer. The food was unbelievably good and we had a superb 3 course meal for £10. The pub was popular, plenty of folk enjoying their meals and a good background of conversation. There were a couple of TV screens showing one of the sky sports channels, but no sound so not obtrusive. A smaller room containing a pool table, and another area at the front of the bar with comfy sofa seats also full. A good locals pub, and it was sad to see the "Pub for Lease" sign on the wall. Hope to visit again as it is near the caravan site we have just found we can use for visits to Sheffield so we will be back.
