Update 2026. Change of ownership and a thorough refurb seen this pub evolved into an eating house, with a modern, open feel. Almost entirely tabled for diners, although they did find us a table for a quick drink before the booking arrived. It still has some nice touches and very friendly and helpful staff, but is not as good as it once was, not least as the ale range was limited to two types of Hobgoblin and a Wainwright - seemingly cask rather than brewery conditioned but you can never be too sure. Possibly good for dining but less so for drinking at.

(Nov 2013 review) An excellent pub in a quiet village near the river, which shows what difference an enthusiastic landlord can make. Nice old building with slightly random layout, as a good pub should be. Several ales from the extended Marstons range on offer (Good Beer Guide listed) and nice range of home cooked food, but it is all the little extras that make it stand out, including a loyalty card scheme. Of particular note is the 'Dog Bar' - probably the most canine-friendly pub I have seen. Also garden and regular barbecues outside. Well worth a diversion off the main road or an excursion from nearby York.
