Old Boots left this review about The Ship
An old inn that has been gutted, remodelled and extended into a single room dining pub with a modern drawing-room type decor. Entering through the only door from the huge car park the first thing you see is a mannikin of an old sea-dog sat there with his pipe, the second is a blackboard stating “Welcome to the Ship Please wait to be seated”. In spite of the dart board over one of the fireplaces the casual drinker is limited to a couple of sofas next to the toilets, some posh wicker chairs and standing room at the bar counter. The rest of the room is permanently set for dining with tables with chairs or settles/benches in all parts. The central L shaped bar counter has two sets of three pulls, only two in use with Old Speckled Hen and decent enough Bombardier when I called in briefly, all the usual kegs from Guinness to Tetleys via Carling, Stella and Becks with cider from Gaymers. The staff are very aware this is a restaurant first, pub second. A few bits and pieces of nautical bric a brac, an anchor, ships wheels and a portrait of Captain Cook reflecting the fact that the pub is near the River Tees and was navigable to here. The rest is the standard sort of pub pictures and photos and typical clutter. Basically one big room but separated into three or four areas by the clever use of high back settles, fish tank and a couple of residual walls. In spite of an entry in the Good Beer Guide this is not really a pub for casual beer drinkers but probably a good place for unfussy family dining.
