A very attractive looking old coaching inn in this slightly off the beaten track village, there is a pleasant looking courtyard at the front as well as a small beer garden at the rear. It looks to be quite a substantial size, although it also offers accomodation so not all of it is open to the public.
Internally it consists of one main bar running along the front of the pub, and a further restaurant area around the corner. Décor wise it’s a bit of a mix of traditional and contemporary, with sanded wooden boards on the floor and a few small black beams on the ceiling. Farrow & Ball painted green wood panelling covered the lower part of the walls, with rough white plasterwork up above. A large fireplace was something of a feature at one end, with a stone chimney breast above and an enormous pile of logs. A few random bits of artwork were dotted around the walls, whilst the seating was mostly padded chairs of one sort or another. We had hoped to have a bite to eat for lunch such as a sandwich, but apparently these are not offered. We do have some pub classics, said the friendly barman, and indeed the menu listed a burger or fish & chips, both at £17. Deciding we’d just settle on some crisps instead, we were again disappointed to be told that they only had peanuts and pork scratchings.
Unfortunately, there were no real ales available, with the Doom Bar having run out and two further pumps being unused. There was a keg IPA who's name escapes me. Ciders fared little better, with my preferred Thatcher’s Gold being off, leaving just Orchard Thieves. Overall, I’ve mixed feelings about this – it’s a pleasant old pub, and the staff were very friendly, but the lack of much in the way of either drinks or food rather put me off.
