In-between visits some wally got the grey paint out and turned the front bar into a fairly sterile experience. Four ales, utterly mainstream stuff in GK Yardbird and Rudolph, Tribute and TTL (NBSS 3.5). Thrrrrup! Remains GBG listed but frankly I wouldn’t see the need to schlep back over anytime soon. Real shame – emasculation. 6.5

June 2011
After a failed attempt in 2010, I finally got to visit the Comberemere which is a lovely traditional building set back from the pavement making it look more like a house than a pub. This extends to the interior which is comprised of three rooms linked by a corridor; the main front bar, a lounge and a telly room. I spent my visit in the main bar which had an attractive tiled bar back (with some old beer bottles perched atop), Wolves memorabilia scattered around. Unsure of how ‘original’ the interior is but it does the job. The floor was carpeted (well-worn!) and I have to say that there was an underlying whiff of the old damp and it was quite cold. Five ales were on (Banks Mild and Bitter, Brew Dog Trashy Blonde (£2.75), Brakspear Oxford Gold and Black Sheep). The Trashy Blonde was spot-on and I ended up staying for three pints more than I expected, aided by the chatty demeanour of the Black Country barmaid. I noted a coffee machine available which I wouldn’t have expected in a place like this. Point of interest is that the gents have a large tree growing in them and out of the roof. From conversation I gather that the pub is owned by Punch. I really enjoyed my visit and it feels a million miles away from the junction and town centre but there needs to be a bit of TLC in the offing I think. Well-worthwhile (beware that it doesn’t open until around 6 on weekday afternoons). Rated 8

The Combermere Arms is certainly easy to miss if unaware of the location, or in fact its existence. It feels a bit like a house with a small bar room to the left of the entrance where a short counter supports four keg products alongside five hand pumps that were drawing Nuttycombe Brewing’s East Street Cream, Tribute, GK’s Old Speckled Hen and Watch Room Golden Ale alongside Castle Rock’s Elsie Mo (decent). There’s minimal seating in here with just a banquette under the front window. Opposite to the right of the entrance is a slightly smaller room that has banquette seating and a fireplace. Someone in here was watching European football on their phone, which I found odd when every pub with spitting distance of here was showing the football on big screens. There’s a bit more seating at the rear, but this is a very small pub. More people were out back in the brick floored yard that houses picnic tables, some of which are under a marquee. The toilets are also in an outhouse out the back. Worth a look.

Need to keep your eyes peeled, even if it is on the main road. Its a converted Grade II listed house and not obviously a pub when looking directly face on. I had to do a double check, after consulting Google Maps - then noticed the sign about the front door.

Small, multi-roomed, with the bar to the left and two further rooms on the opposite corridor to the right. The bar had a fire going but was busy, so I went to the back room, where I found solitude but no fire.

Went for landlord and although it tasted fine - its was completely murky. It is my most checked in beer, so I know how it is meant to look. Guessing, I was last in the barrel. Not quite what you'd expect from a good beer Guide regular.

The conversation starter comes from a visit to the gents. A living tree is a unique feature!
