Old Boots left this review about The Slug & Lettuce
An odd interior layout, it appears to be several old buildings knocked into one with entrances on Back Swinegate and Grape Lane. Not a favourite bar chain of mine it offers about the same as the very few others I’ve visited - a few national keg brands on three T-Bars, obtrusive background music, giggly girly clientele, mostly uncomfortable seating and to be fair a menu that looked interesting although I didn’t eat here. The staff must have read my mind when writing my notes as they upped the music volume perhaps to get rid of me, no need guys I wasn’t staying long or indeed coming back.

This was my first of two Slug & Lettuce bars visited during a recent midweek afternoon walk around York with the family. The interior is L-shaped with the main entrance on Back Swinegate and a rear entrance on Swinegate just to the right of Coffee Yard. There is split-level seating throughout and the tiled bar counter supports premium keg alongside Beavertown’s Neck Oil. There was some dance pop music playing for the entertainment of the one other customer. Apart from the barmaid’s cleavage bursting at the seams there was very little to report and I don’t plan on returning.

Fairly typical Slug & Lettuce, with a bright, modern, contrived interior, a significant part of which was roped off at time of visit, probably due to shortage of staff. This plus the volume of tourists also possibly accounted for an actual queue snaking away from an otherwise empty bar, which I obviously refused to join. The only saving grace was a decent pint of Black Sheep, and they had taken the trouble to get a Cask Marque listing, so at least someone cares about the beer.
