The Queens Head is a picturesque village pub somewhat off the beaten track in the Suffolk village of Hawkedon. The original building is a former 15th century coaching inn and internally it looks little changed with plenty of low wooden beams and a large brick fireplace.
The former West Suffolk branch Pub of the Year albeit back in 2007, like a lot of rural pubs it has had to focus on food to survive and a significant section of the back of the pub functions as a restaurant. However it retains a cosy and well used bar area and the bar still supports six ale and cider pumps.
The pub has permanent house ales of Adnams Bitter and Woodforde Wherry and then features smaller regional brewery beers from the likes of Keltek, Buntingford and Crouch Vale and for my visit Buntingford Highwayman was on and kept well.
The pub benefits from having a large garden outback for the summer months as well as a few bench tables to the front. And it also supports an attached butchers shop which should mean that the meets served in the restaurant should be good local fare, but you a better off checking on trip advisor how the Queens Head functions as a restaurant, as we only stopped here to try the beer.
