A wonderfully quirky village pub, well described by Blackthorn, below. There is an outside bar next to the children’s play area over the road, Bendy’s Bar, and another bar counter in the main garden when the weather allows. There is a row of beach huts, all heated and furnished, in the garden, which were part of their Covid bubble measures, though these are now being sold off. Inside, the esoterica included two pianos converted to high benches with a table between them. Under-18s are not allowed in the bar, though they are tolerated in the garden. Dogs, however, are welcomed. Only two ales on, Butcombe Original and Rare Breed, both in perfect condition, and four boxed ciders were on the bar plus two on draft. Food is locally sourced and freshly cooked, and it’s reasonably priced. An excellent village pub to which I shall most certainly return, hopefully to a third (guest) ale.

A good sized pub in this pleasant, if slightly remote, Somerset village, it has been redecorated, and temporarily renamed, as he Gingerbread House for the Christmas season and has been gaining much press exposure for this including the national media, so it was not entirely surprising to find the car park pretty much full to capacity on a recent Saturday lunchtime visit. The pub is indeed liberally decorated with all manor of bits and pieces, and certainly looks very much like a gingerbread house. There was also a large Christmas tree made entirely of empty wine bottles which was quite a feature, although unfortunately my photographs of this have not been approved for some reason.

Internally it has thankfully escaped any gingerbread themed refurbishment and retains a traditional and cosy country pub ambience. It’s surprisingly spacious inside with the main bar area being in the centre of the pub with smaller rooms off to each side. The right hand room was a cosy spot with slate style tiling on the floor and exposed stone walls and small inset windows. A fireplace was at one end with a wood burning stove blazing away and the bottom end had dark wood panelling on the walls which together with a picture of Queen Victoria gave it an almost elegant feel. A small bread oven was at one end, and near to this a recess in the wall housed several editions of the Good Beer guide. A slightly smaller room at the rear looked to have slightly less in the way of character and included a piano and TV screen, although neither were in use. A snug to the left had a collection of farming implements on the wall and shared a dual aspect fireplace with the main bar.

Beers on tap were Butcombe Original and Rare Breed along with their own Gingerbread Christmas Ale. Ciders were well represented with Thatcher’s Dry, Ashton Press, Ashton Still and Orchard Pig Reveller. All in all I thought this was a great pub with a cosy ambience, and I will certainly return to check out the food. Only the landlord with his somewhat disinterested demeanour let it sown slightly, but nonetheless, still well worth a visit.

Maintains a rural pub character and has a couple of well kept ales. Didn't try the food, but the menu looked nothing out of the ordinary. Very pleasant garden and overspill area. Above average.
