An ancient building which has clearly seen better days doesn't present the best impression and, internally, it's looking equally knocked about. The Queen Street Brewhouse advertises itself as specialising in real ales, ciders and craft. However, on my visit, the two handpumps were unbadged (I didn't enquire) while a couple of underwhelming Pale Ales comprised the craft options, though half a dozen Belgians upped the interest a little.

With the back door open and the front in shade, it was strictly coats on for me and the other punter. They were setting up for an event, so presumably the pub attracts a bit of a crowd later in the day, but it was a bit take it or leave it for me.

Tucked away just off the High Street in a very old, slightly wonky building, it certainly looked appealing and together with the pub’s name suggesting that they brew their own beer and strains of live music wafting out through the open windows I couldn’t help but wander in.

Internally it’s one long, open plan room with a performance area at the rear and on the whole it’s retained much of it’s original décor with old timberwork both on the ceiling and inset in to the walls. Only the modern painted hardboard sheets interspersed between some of the beams jarred somewhat, presumably a very cheap attempt at hiding some problem with the ceiling. Exposed brick pillars supplemented the timberwork and there was a tiled floor through much of the pub. The front section was perhaps a little cosier with some low leather sofas to sit at. A few booths along the right of the pub also looked a decent spot to sit. An unusual black and white colour scheme was painted on the wall at the back of the pub, and in addition to the live music when we visited there was also a large selection of vinyl records to choose from.

The real ales on tap were Dominion’s Trigger the Bitter Sipper and Phoenix Pale Allen. There was also a good selection of craft options listed on a board, although many of these appeared to be imported, and on our visit these consisted of Delirium, Time & Tide Brynhildr, Westmalle Dubbel, Brugsezot Belgian Blond, Hacker Pschorr, Kasteel Rouge and Solway Society Super Position. Ciders were also well represented with Gran’ma Grell Old Trinidad Sunrise (a spiced rum and mango cider at £6 a half!), Lilley’s Mango, Thundering Molly, Lilley’s Rhubarb, Heck’s Tremletts Bitter, Happy Daze, Peto Press, Cracklin’ Rosie and Sheppy’s Farmhouse Dry. All in all, a great pub with a lively atmosphere and a quite eclectic drinks selection. Well worth a visit.
