There was one real ale available here - GK Abbot (£1.80 a half), with a second pump with a reversed clip. I didn't see any sign of food during my weekday early afternoon visit.
This pub now does B & B accommodation, and in fact when I was in there was a chap sitting around the bar with his luggage in tow. There is some bench seating outside on the pavement, one occupied by a bunch of Indian guys smoking and chatting, but apparently not drinking. Inside there are three interconnected rooms, essentially along the left hand side of the pub, with the bar counter on the right. The first two rooms are dominated by pool tables in the centre of each of them, with the end room having a stage at the back with a pull down screen, presumably to show the football. One thing I noticed was the Tudor arch separating the second and third rooms - a trademark feature of the pub architect Thomas Nowell Parr; along with the ceiling batons which are another of his trademark features. The leaded lights in the lower parts of the windows is another attractive feature.
But overall this is a fairly Spartan and characterless place. My half of Abbot was in good shape though, and at £1.80 a half not unreasonably priced. But overall there's no real need for me to return.
