Grand building that looks a bit dilapidated from the outside. Enter to a large bar area painted a fairly unappealing pea green with loud rock music to help things along. Two ales, Directors and somewhat fizzy Wainwright Gold (NBSS 2.5 – was this the dreaded ‘fresh ale’?) with dopey service to match. Of more interest is the separate restaurant with bar to the rear side right, pretty much untouched since the mid-90s. And beyond that is a fairly sizeable garden with water feature, fish pond and mature trees which was a genuine surprise. Someone with a bit of vision could make this a go-to pub; the basics are already there. In the meantime, it’s certainly handy for an al fresco pint. 5.5

A large pub/restaurant positioned in the centre of town. We took the entrance on the right and walked down a couple of steps into a lounge area with the bar facing us. Further along on the right, you enter a seated area set out for dining. The bar counter was finished in a sage colour with black and white floor tiles boarding. The restaurant area had some 1930's style stained glass lighting.
The second half of the pub was accessible from a interlinking passageway. This section of the pub hosted a large L shaped bar and the colour scheme in here was also in a sage green theme. There were three handpumps, with two in use. London Pride and Thwaites Lancaster Bomber were their two ales on handpump on this visit.
