Tucked away just off the main road but still close to bus stops to/from Edinburgh & worth the trip. Interior as described below.

Tremendous back street pub with strong line up of very good beers, albeit with a large proportion from over the border. Both of my selections were NBSS 4 (Bishops Farewell and Jarl), prices were reasonable for the area and service was friendly. Definitely worth the effort of getting here - and ScotRail did their best to stop me!

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Staggs Bar (The Volunteer Arms)
The Volunteer Arms is a very traditional side street pub (although this is nominally part of the High Street), owned by the same family for over 150 years (and hence its alternative name). Mid-brown woodwork in the bar area, with lighter (and more modern) wood panelling in the rear snug. Justifiably in the Good Beer Guide, with an expansive array of Camra certificates in the corridor leading to another lounge bar at the back that is only used at the busiest times. We found five Oakham beers on the two banks of four handpumps on the main counter, plus Fyne Ales Jarl and Loch Lomond Silkie Stout. Well worth seeking out.
