Brewhouse & Kitchen is an interesting brewpub that has been fitted out to a high standard with a split-level upstairs area that consists of various seating areas decked out with exposed brick and wooden flooring and furniture. There’re a mix of high and standard tables and some old barrels have been repurposed into tables. There’s also a cellar bar, that I didn’t visit, that can be hired out, as can the ‘snug’ at the top of the pub. The four hand pumps on the counter were drawing the Brewery’s own ales from their brewery underneath the pub. There’re also lots of their keg option along the bar, and on the back bar are nine craft options from other suppliers. There were two other customers during my recent midweek visit, so I got to have a good look around, and I liked what I saw. However, the corporate board advertising different packages and the general hipster vibe mean that I’m going to agree with Will that this place feels like it’ll be a not so relaxing place when busy.

This is a grand building and makes an interesting, or what on a busy day must be an overwhelming, pub. Luckily I found it very quiet at tea time on a Monday, and before anyone spotted me and asked my how I was ("Are you all right?" = "What can I get you to drink?" in modern English) I'd had time to read the menu as well as study the hand pumps, and then wonder if it was too late to make a dash for the door. I settled for a half of the home brew Forest Best Bitter, and when they mentioned caramel on the pump clip they weren't kidding were they. I quite like the idea of brew pubs, but this was no Firkin good, never mind Dogbolter. (NBSS 2.5 - rather grudgingly, though there's nothing much wrong with it that a competent brewer couldn't have fixed, or maybe even a decent cellarman.)

My first thought in here was that it felt like a middle class Wetherspoons, so I wasn’t surprised to find it used to be one. Three ales on, a golden, IPA and bitter from their downstairs brewery. My golden was in excellent condition to be fair but at £4.50 a pint, it had to be. All a bit vacuous and lacking personality, and that’s just the customers. Interior is quite nicely done though including a kind of cosy snug area with a fireplace. It didn’t really click with me, but I would visit again.
