I couldn't see the pub door at first because of the cars parked as close as they could be. Not because of the rain, which wasn't that heavy, after all I'd been cycling for nearly two hours and was still fairly cheerful - just laziness, I guess. Once located, the door gives entry to a lobby with lounge/dining to the left and a small public bar to the right. Access to the counter was initially difficult because of a game of darts taking place across the space in front. Once through the danger zone I spotted two hand pumps, one unclipped but the other with Black Sheep Best. And this really was "best" - an easy NBSS 4, and if I'd gone for a pint it might have talked it's way to a 4.5. I was only going two miles to Edmundbyers, but I didn't want to risk a fall and decided to come back Tuesday for the other half (closed Mondays).
Update: Came back on Tuesday and had a pint this time. If the previous one was NBSS 4.25, then this was 3.75, so they both get a 4.

Old Boots left this review about Manor House
Two room hilltop pub on the main A68 road. It has a dining room to the left and a bar with five pulls to the right. Guests from Morland, Bateman, and Sonnet43 when I visited. Beer quality was excellent. Exposed stone walls and tasteful pictures among a plethora of chalkboards as decor. Traditionally furnished in both rooms it's fairly food led.

21/11/08. Friendly service, Nice locals, good log fire in the harth. I had one of the best pints of beer that I have had this year. "Nels Best" which comes from High House Farm Brewrey. They also had 3 other local real ales plus one real cider 7%. The food looked rather expensive, but I will test another day. 20/2/09 Tested the food 7/10. Service 6/10. But the Beer Nels Best was excellent 10/10.
18/6/09 visited this pub again,the beer was excellent. This pub has to be one of the best in the area?
