There's been a bit of redecoration going on here since my previous visit six years ago, the only things I recognised being the position of the bar and the fire place (with real fire), and even those I wouldn't swear to. It's now very modern in style, with a bare brick wall at one end (fake), a bare stone chimney breast (fake), a black marble facing to the bar counter (fake) and genuinely awful pop videos on the two large screens (Sophie Ellis-Bextor, anyone?).
There are two hand pumps and my Wadworth Treacle Treat was in good condition, though I suspect the subtle taste of treacle would have become cloying if I'd had more than a half. This was the quietest of the three pubs I did in New Mills before my train for Sheffield, though people were popping in and out and it wasn't by any means deserted. The three women who were running the place seemed very nice, though a little underworked (maybe it got busier later). I wouldn't mind popping in again between trains. (Toilets are downstairs but there's a disabled access one on the ground floor.)

Called in around noon, and after waiting about 3 mins for a bar person to arrive finally called it a day and headed off to the Royal Oak further up the road.

There's no real ale here, but a blackboard beside the bar lists several bottled ales that are available, such as Old Peculier and Tanglefoot, all at £2.75. The usual keg lagers and ciders are available.
The internal walls have been removed, leaving a large one-roomed pub that is mostly carpeted and with comfortable chairs. Around the bar there is a tiled area with some stools to encourage drinkers to linger. A very welcome solid-fuel stove is the feature at one end and this is a pleasant place to pass the time while waiting for a bus at the nearby turning circle.
