I've been wanting to try this place for years, and a trip to Altrincham last month allowed that dream to become a reality. Four hand pulls at the bar, with three on, offering Weetwood Cheshire Cat, the JW Lees re-brew of Boddingtons Cask, and Wainwright. A rather dull line-up, unfortunately, leading me to explore the keg options. I decided to try the Hawkstone Lager, which set me back £3.20 for a half. This was a nice enough lager but certainly not anything special.
It was quiet at 12:30 on Friday afternoon but there was a nice atmosphere, music playing, and the place was nice and warm. Look beyond the modern and you will see signs that this is an old building. Ornate plasterwork coving to the edge of the ceiling and possibly the original floorboards restored. Seating is comfortable, with a mix of high and low tables. There is a beer garden to the rear, within Kings Court.
I thought the Cheshire Tap was comfortable and pleasant, but certainly has potential to improve by offering a better ale selection.

Well described below, this is a modern style bar with a few ales on. Beer is a bit more mainstream compared to some of the other new bars in Alty - Wainwrights, Cheshire Cat on cask. As a guitarist was playing and the place was rammed on a Saturday evening I didn’t stick around, but it seemed like a happy place.

Cheshire Tap is a thin bar with seating at the front and a long bar counter along the left hand wall that faces some seating that runs up the right wall. The is a little more seating at the rear including a very long high wooden table. During a recent Wednesday evening visit the television was off, this place is too trendy for football, but there was some background music playing.
External seating runs down the right hand side of the pub and there is more seating in a nice space at the rear in Kings Court, which I think is an area shared by a few businesses. The service was friendly and the barman gave me directions to a very nice burrito bar around the corner. Premium and craft keg is available, half a 4% Beavertown Neck Oil was £3.25. I counted five handpumps, two of which were unused leaving Wainwright, Weetwood’s Cheshire Cat and Twisted Wheel’s Speed-Wobble as the cask ale options. This is certainly more of a bar than a pub, but I liked it and would return.
