A pub and eatery that is based within the Warder’s rooms of the old Georgian prison, which has a patio area to the front (in the courtyard of the jail). It is a plain, functional undressed rough stone building, with moulded stone lintels and mullions. It has a front facing crow-stepped gable and dormer windows, with a central entrance up a small staircase. In the GBG 2011.
The interior has two rooms that run off the entrance corridor. To the left is a lounge, with its own little bar in the corner. This was totally deserted when I popped my head around the door. There was a TV, though this wasn’t on and the background music was general and at a decent level – it had a piano, so you could always make your own if need be! The decor is black patterned wallpaper, with blue wood panel, a blue patterned carpet and white ceiling, with leather comfy chairs and pictures of celebrities on the walls for some reason – maybe former inmates done for tax evasion. To the right is the bar/dining room, which doubles as the ticket office. It is really more for dining, as it has all tables with comfy enough chairs. The decor is mainly undressed stone, with cream and a black/blue stripped wallpaper wall. The ceiling is light, with a patterned carpet. There is a nice stone fireplace and the serving bar has a beaten copper canopy. Old jail photos and pictures are on the walls and a bookcase thingy with books and vases was on the backwall. The place does food, but I didn’t eat so can’t comment on that, but it looked great. There was no TV here and the music was general and at a decent level. The clientel was family based in this room as you would expect. The service was good.
Beer; usual tap stuff, with a very good Penpont Cornish Arvor and Roughtor, along with an untried Keltek Magek on handpull
A bit touristy as you would expect, but worth a visit even if you don’t go around the prison and meet the array of ghosts that featured on Most Haunted.
