The Antrobus Arms is a popular gastropub situated outside of the village of Antrobus on the main A559. The interior feels quite anodyne with grey wainscotting and grey wallpaper. As you enter, the bar is in a section to the left-hand side but all of the tables in the room are given over to dining. A second room in a raised are off to the right is also for dining, which leaves just stools at the bar for drinkers to use during food service times. Most people arriving for food were told that their tables weren't ready. So, the bar area did get quite crowded for most of the duration of our visit. The only other alternative for drinkers was a small garden overlooking a field at the rear.
The lack of space dedicated to drinkers is a bit of a shame, as the beer range and quality was rather good. It is certainly enough to warrant a place in the Good Beer Guide, which it does indeed fulfill. Beers were also mainly local. Weetwood Best Bitter is the regular cask ale. Guests for our visit were George Shaw Spinners Gold, Weetwood Turncoat & Salopian How Soon Is Now. The cider was Aspall's.
The all-female bar/waiting staff were all very efficient and friendly. Children are allowed in. I can clearly see why this is a big hit for anybody wanting a decent meal. However, despite the range and quality of the beer (my Spinners Gold was in excellent form, despite it not being a beer I would normally opt for), it felt a little uncomfortable being there just for a drink and the surroundings are all a bit bland. Perhaps best visited outside of peak meal times.

Clearly a rather old building, the main area is supposed to date from the 1700s however you would never know this on entering. Completely stripped of anything recognisable as original or even vaguely old, lots of clean straight lines, grey or that greenish grey colour, even the low beamed ceiling in the old part of the pub has received this treatment. Some bookcase wallpaper, fireplaces containing artfully chopped stacked logs, the long straight bar runs along a back wall in the main area.
The place is unashamedly foody with virtually every table set with wine glasses and napkins, we were in for food anyway and the quality and service was good, although the meals were a little on the expensive side. Beers were fine however with three on, Tatton Best and also Epiphany and Salopian Oracle leaving one unclipped.
Certainly not a pub to visit for a drinking session, not that sort of place at all but ok for a decent meal with a well kept pint. Outdoor seating available and there is a large car park.

2011 August Saturday early evening. Pre-booked. Party of 16. Arrived a little late and they were very accommodating in keeping our reserved tables. Unfortunately, group got split up and arrived at different intervals so those who arrived early were served almost immediately whilst those joining 20 minutes later were advised of a 45 minute wait for their meals as the place had got very busy with many orders going through. In the event the wait was only about 20 minutes and so not so bad. There is a very varied menu with some very good offers on light meals (called senior citizen specials but I don't think they checked your actual age!). Also on the menu were the traditional pub grub fayre fish, gammon, steaks, chicken etc. Meals arrived well cooked and very hot and very hearty portions. Service was with a smile despite the busy period and always very courteous. Deserts again were well proportioned and served efficiently. All in all a very nice meal, in very pleasant surroundings and despite the busy timing the noise level was certainly acceptable. I would class the prices in the average bracket although with the offers you can eat very reasonably. Would definitely recommend if your looking for a hearty meal.
