A big Victorian pub which looks great from the outside but inside has lost most of its historic features to a rather bland modernish facelift, possibly aimed at a younger clientele, with a bit of dark paint and a touch of recycled wood. There is a tabled courtyard at the rear. The beer range rescues it however, with 11 of 12 handpumps in use. The selection on this visit was Derby Mercia, Hogshead England's Glory, Little Critters White Wolf and Turtley Tropical, Sunnydaze IPA, Beermats Matte Black, St Austell Proper Job and a Cornish cider, along with three hangovers from the Greene King days - Yardbird, Fresh Legs, and Old Golden Hen.

This pub is now totally revamped and another good addition to Beeston's expanding pub scene. GK have gone and it's now a freehouse, hence the choice of 10 cask ales and 2 ciders. The young barman was welcoming and certainly had good knowledge of his beers. The interior was modern and spacious, including the beer garden. On handpump, Saltaire Blonde, Bradfield Farmers Pale and Cherry Beer, Castle Rock Black Gold, Hogs Back Tea, Beermats Matrix IPA, Acorn Burning Bails and Summer Pale, Drone Valley Brewery Coal Aston Porter and Morland Old Golden Hen.

Due to a popular local campaign, the commercial has remained open as a pub, still owned by Greene King, however, half of it has become an Indian restaurant. It now no longer looks like the main picture above as the entire outside has been painted battleship grey.
