Easily missed among all the restaurants on Walmgate,it has a shop frontage with seating in the two plate glass windows,a wooden floor with an ale house vibe while there are directions to the first floor restaurant called the Chopping Block. The two sided bar is to the right, there is limited seating here but a rear room has a miss match of scruffy furniture and a bar billiards table. There is a tidemark notification of past floodings from the Foss in this low lying street ,the last being in 2015.
Handpumps are dotted about and were offering on my trip Great Newsome Jem's Stout,Sleck Dust (NBSS 2,clear but developed a tang as the pint went down )and Fotheringham Best. Some bottles and kegs of continental lager but nothing exciting.
It could be so much better ,but there was an air that nobody was too bothered and the pub was very quiet on a busy Saturday afternoon.
I wouldn't bother in future.

Not a very inviting frontage, with lots of signs proclaiming the restaurant aspect, which is actually located upstairs. The ground floor is a tolerable drinking establishment - a slightly cluttered layout of aged feel with various bits of bare brick and a slightly musty smell, being in a flood area. There are 5 cask ales and a few craft keg, mainly from Yorkshire and including a few from Brew York over the road. It doesn't have the pull of the latter but is much quieter and pleasant enough.

Not been in since their last flood, it’s scrubbed up well and naturally has been redecorated. Four plus four pulls; the front four were fully loaded just one on the set behind, a couple from Ainsty plus other smaller Yorkshire breweries. Ok beer quality but nowt special. Seems less food focused than previously.
