My only repeat pub on this visit to Keswick (it's been almost 15 years since my last trip to the town), the Dog & Gun is still a popular place in the town and it was doing a good trade on my late Wednesday evening visit.

It is a traditional pub with bare boards and plenty of tables throughout the long and narrow interior. There was a good mix of customers in what is a centrally located pub.

Cumbrian Ales Loweswater Gold & Theakston Old Peculier are the regular cask ales. Guests were Eden River Emperor & Beacon, Tirril Borrowdale Bitter & Greene King Wood and Bang & Dog and Gun Golden Ale.

A CAMRA discount is offered, but by this stage of proceedings in what was my 16th pub of the day, I didn't notice the aforementioned dogs, or at least I don't recall tripping over any!

Still a good choice when in Keswick, but on this experience there are now some better pubs and bars in town.

Harsh with my 1 star review last time. I must have been "Hangry"

Packed again and like Will's finding, dog ownership appears to be mandatory :-)

Greene King but its the independent Cumbrian breweries on offer and perfectly kept that raises this above others. A fine Loweswater gold (or two) sampled on this visit.

Despite the fact that this pub attracts dogs and their human companions in large numbers, I still like it. Since my last visit there has been a bit of a makeover, with what looks to be a new or renovated bar counter (with hooks!) and all but one of the settles that previously provided most of the seating now gone. These changes have made the pub lighter and perhaps more welcoming, though also perhaps losing some of its traditional appeal in the process. There are eight hand pumps arrayed along the bar counter (see photos), and I tried both the Keswick Thirst Noel 6% (which seemed sweeter than I remembered it from previous Christmas visits) and Eden Brewery's Cumbrian Black, a 3.6% mild that was so good I had a second half - partly because I enjoyed the first one so much, and partly to prove to the slightly inebriated chap stood at the bar that I was definitely not drinking Guinness.
