Classy, old school hotel bar style venue. From entrance door the venue splits either side of a wedge-shaped bar with serving only on the right-hand side of the wedge. There is seating all around the wedge including seating at the bright green fronted bar. A TV on the wall was showing the Olympics and a dresser at the back, primarily housing the condiments for the diners here, also had the shelves filled with china curios. The ceiling of the bar itself was adorned with pump clips of prior offerings and a wall board advertised upcoming offerings. The venue seemed popular with young couples here with their little ones whilst at the same time enjoying a quaff. There is a small smoking area out the back with a couple of benches for those choosing to quaff outside amongst the smokers.
Six hand pumps sat on the bar offering a good cask selection of Butcombe Original, Cwrw Otley Thai BO - a lemongrass pale ale, Nuttycombe Bollotics & Rosie's Pig Rhubarb Cloudy cider. Keg offering also pretty decent (for a keg offering) of Sam Smiths Pure Brewed Organic Lager, Thatchers Haze cider, Carling, Staropramen, Estrella Galicia, Stowford Press cider, Denim Demon session IPA from Misfits Brew Co, Ale House Rock DDH hazy pale from Crafty Devil and Bonville Pale Ale from Hop Union Brewery. Also, a good selection of craft beers by the can.
This is a classy venue. Even though the venue is obviously aiming to attract local young families, it is really works as a venue for all comers. I would have been really happy to have been brought to such a quality establishment as a young one myself. I would be really happy if this venue was local to me, but I am pleased it exists in my spiritual homeland. Top marks.
