A brewery tap for Purple Moose, housed in a traditional book dating from 1864. GBG 2024.

Smartly decorated, with several booths that offer access to charging points. Lots of purple. Of course, the breweries own beers available.

Finally managed to make it in here after two previously aborted attempts. No longer a ‘gang of four’ pub and now fully Purple Moose. Very nicely done with Moose branding everywhere and the corporate purple in abundance – I like purple so it suited me just fine. Six of theirs on cask, scoops of Madog's (NBSS 4) and Dark Side (3.5) cemented it’s GBG listing for me. There were also two of theirs on keg alongside some other lesser-spotted options. I really liked it, a good attempt at bridging the traditional pub ethos with an appeal to the local mums and yoof market.

After a 13 years hiatus, I finally got back to Porthmadog on a recent Thursday evening. The Australia is the brewery tap for Purple Moose and I've wanted to visit for some time.

In all honesty, I was left feeling a little disappointed. Ales were all from Purple Moose. The usual ones are Snowdonia Ale, Elderflower Ale & Dark Side of the Moose. Glaslyn & Madog's Ale were also on, whilst the real cider was Rosie's Triple D. Craft beers from Purple Moose were Black Rock, Mwsh & Antlered IPA.

The pub does seem quite commercialised. Food seems to be a big proposition here. In fact, I appeared to be in the minority as a drinker. There are two rooms to choose from. The one to the right is the main bar area, whilst one to the left down a step or two seemed to be all diners.

The Australia is undoubtedly a good addition to the Porthmadog drinking scene. Whether it's the best place these days, I'm not sure. I remember Spooner's Bar and the Station Inn being better. But that was some time ago.
