Yet another change of ownership since my previous review, and this time a change of name as well. Their website describes them as a Mediterranean restaurant and bar, although there didn’t seem to be any sign of food being served on our recent visit.
Décor wise it is still very contemporary with dark blue/grey wood panelling on the lower part of the walls and pale blue paintwork above. Flooring was dark laminate boards whilst the bar counter was covered in some sort of stone effect cladding. A raised area was up a couple of steps to the left whilst some high chairs in the windows made the most of the outlook, such as it is. An old marble fireplace was off to one side, but the fire within looked to be of the gas variety rather than anything more authentic. A number of jazzy mirrors on the walls had various drink themes, such as gin and prosecco. The techno music seemed just a tad too loud, especially if you were eating.
Unfortunately there were no beers on tap, real or otherwise. Ciders fared somewhat better with Carling Black Fruit and a trio from Thatcher’s – Gold, Haze and Old Rascal. I can imagine this being quite a trendy spot for youngsters to hang out, but there was little evidence of that on our visit although it was a particularly unpleasant weather which perhaps kept people away.

A good sized pub at the end of the pedestrianized shopping area, it seems to have had something of a chequered history of late having been through several changes of ownership and some long spells of closure. It was even bought by Butcombe at one time, but even that doesn’t seem to have worked out and it appears that is no longer the case. It was extensively refurbished during one of these changes of ownership, and it still has quite a contemporary feel to it.
It’s split in to two rooms, with the bar counter in between. The rear room seems to be more geared up for dining, with plenty of tables and chairs all laid up for eating along with maroon paintwork and venetian blinds at the window. The front area is more drinker friendly with a wood strip floor and very pale khaki green painted wood panelling on the lower art of the walls with white paintwork above. A number of arty black and white photos are dotted around and there was a fireplace off to one side with a very decrepit looking gas fire in it. Several vases of illuminated twigs were dotted around.
Beers on offer with 6X and Horizon from Wadworths, whilst ciders were well represented with a trio from Orchard Pig – Maverick, Reveller and Explorer along with Thatcher’s Gold and Thatcher’s Haze. A board next to the bar highlighted a number of bottled craft ales. We were made to feel slightly unwelcome by one of the barmen cleaning down the tables all around us, almost as though he was trying to encourage us to leave, and in fact they did call last orders at around 10:15pm, so don’t expect to call in here for a late one.
