A rough and ready village pub, certainly not chocolate box, definitely spit and – well, there’s no sawdust here. The pub reopened last year after several months’ closure and some limited renovation which appears to have stopped prematurely. It’s just off the main road though the village, on the historic Fosse Way. There is a scruffy gravel garden at the back with tables and benches. There is also limited parking at the front and on the road at the side. Inside, there are three main bar areas, the main bar with a counter, a games room and a carpeted dining room. The bar has rough timber flooring and similar planks on the walls. Pool and darts are available, though we didn’t see anyone actually playing. There was truly awful pop music on the stereo, and there was a jukebox which wasn’t in use. There are two original fireplaces, one with a modern woodburner. The barmaid was friendly and helpful, and the customers – exclusively young, male and rowdy during our visit -were chatty and friendly despite the banter. There was one ale on, Harding’s Bitter, which was well past its best but still just about drinkable. Also available were Guinness, Cruzcampo, Inch’s Cider, Thatcher’s Gold and three fruit ciders from the thatcher’s hydrant. We weren’t sure quite what food is available, but apparently there is some. They focus on community activities, and sadly the opening hours are quite limited, mainly due to staff shortages. It’s great to see a community pub reopening, but I think I’ll leave this one to the locals for the time being.
