Gravity assisted progress down the hill to the bus stop meant I had a few spare minutes to take this one in. Little to say about it really; a dull opened-out aircraft hangar place with no real charm. Two cask present in the now-tedious double-act of Doom Bar and Taylor’s Landlord. My Doom was at least quaffable (NBSS 3) which was a positive. 4.5

This is a good sized pub, only a couple of minutes stroll from the triangle, but located in a side street so many people who don’t know the town well might not realise it’s there. It appears to be largely one open room split across two levels, with a cosier lounge area around one corner although I did not investigate this. It’s not somewhere I frequent often as it had the reputation of being very much a youngster’s pub, but following a recent refurbishment I thought I’d give it another go.

The pub has a reasonably contemporary appearance with laminate wood flooring and various paint shades on the walls including grey, mustard and maroon as well as cream. A small stage area was at one end and a DJ was in the process of setting up on a recent Friday evening visit. Fortunately we departed before he got going. The age group of the punters was mixed I suppose, although there still seemed to be a fair proportion of teenagers in attendance as well as a couple of toddlers running around (who appeared to belong to one of the aforementioned teenagers). A number of TV screens were displaying the football and although we didn’t inspect the menu, a small specials board had options such as a burger or sweet & sour pork for around the £5/£6 mark, so unlikely to be that special I would have thought. Service at the bar was a bit a hit and miss with one particularly long wait whilst the staff went round the pub turning all the TV’s on instead of serving.

Beers on tap were Moonshine, Tribute, Old Speckled Hen and Doom Bar, whilst the ciders were a trio from Thatcher’s – Gold, Dry and Haze.
