A roadside Hungry Horse, poor even by their standards. There is a large carpark on three sides of the building, which can be entered by car only from the 4-lane main road, and only in one direction. Inside, the single large bar and dining room has the usual furniture and fixtures, though they have been improved by slashing the bench covers in some areas. There were multiple TV screens, a pool table, laminated menus and annoying jukebox as described below. There was still only one ale on draft, GK IPA, which was in poor condition. Travelling further and not resting is the better option.

A Hungry Horse pub on the main A38, it is handily located just opposite the Aztec West business park and just a stone’s throw from J16 of the M5. There is a small patio area at the front with a few picnic benches, but the outlook on to the dual carriageway is not that appealing. Fortunately there is another smallish patio area at the rear along with a somewhat larger children’s play area.
The main bar area is at the front of the pub and this has the usual generic look of many such establishments with red patterned carpet on the floor and some tiling around the bar. Paintwork was mostly an inoffensive cream, but there were some more vivid hues as well such as burnt orange and maroon. A couple of pictures on the wall highlighted the area’s connection with the aerospace industry, including a photograph of Concorde and a reference to the length of Filton airfield’s (now abandoned) runway. There was also a darts board, pool table and a couple of plasma screens showing a news channel. Further back the pub wraps around the back of the bar counter and extends much further than expected, although this looks to be a predominantly dining area. A couple of fairground style grab machines hinted at the target clientele.
The menu looked to be a mass produced, laminated affair and offered an extensive selection of “pub grub” dishes such as gammon, burgers, fish & chips, chicken tikka masala, etc., and these were mostly priced somewhere around a fiver. There was also a large selection of “big plate” specials, and meal deals of one sort or another on most days.
Despite four hand pumps on the bar, only one was in use dispensing Greene King IPA. Ciders fared somewhat better with Thatcher’s Gold, Stowford Press and Strongbow.
