Recently re-opened after an extensive refurbishment, this is now part of the Butcombe stable and is a traditional looking stone-built pub in this small village, despite being just off the A38 it must get little in the way of any passing trade. They have capitalised on their proximity to the airport by building some accommodation blocks at the rear and it certainly appeared quite popular on our recent mid-week visit. An attractive patio area was at the rear and there is a further beer garden at the front.
Internally it’s very different from my previous visit with everything having moved around, so much so that it was quite difficult to get my bearings or even realise that I was in the same pub. It’s got something of a bijou country house theme to it I suppose, and is quite elegant in places with much parquet wood strip on the floor as well as some Victorian style tiling around the bar, whilst much of the walls had been clad with wood panelling painted in various pastel shades. Leather arm chairs and banquet seating were in a similar assortment of colours, and an extension had been added at the rear with large bi-folding doors and some exposed natural timberwork. There are several different rooms within the pub and the overall effect was quite pleasant, if lacking any particular character.
The food menu was a step or two up from your usual “pub grub” with the cheapest main courses coming in at £14.95. Other than fish & chips or a burger, the other dishes were certainly more the sort of thing that you would expect in a restaurant rather than a traditional pub. My fish & chips with mushy peas and tartare sauce was decent enough with a nice crispy batter, but the actual fish within was definitely a little on the small side.
Beers on tap were Butcombe Original and Butcombe Gold, whilst the ciders were Thatcher’s Gold and Haze. Overall, a decent enough pit stop and there’s plenty of outside space for the warmer weather, but equally there’s nothing sufficiently remarkable about it to warrant a special journey.
