A pleasant country pub tucked away in quite a remote village, it’s unlikely to get anything in the way of passing trade but was nonetheless surprisingly busy on a recent mid-week evening. There are good sized gardens at the front with plenty of tables and a patio and further gardens at the rear that included an enclosure with a pond and a number of chickens, ducks and geese.
Internally it consists of a number of interconnected rooms around a central bar counter. Décor wise, it’s mostly fairly rustic with a mixture of old flag stones, quarry tiles and wooden boards on the floor, although there are also some more contemporary touches such as freshly plastered and painted walls and some duck egg blue wood panelling. The large front room was probably the cosiest with black wood panelling on much of the walls and two massive fire-places at each end with a wood burning stove and wooden mantlepiece. There were perhaps rather more young children than I would have expected in that type of establishment, but that may be due to the fact that it was half term. Bar staff all seemed friendly and helpful, although I thought perhaps the guy dressed in shorts and a rugby top was taking the casual look a bit too far.
The menu offered a fairly succinct selection of dishes such as steaks, ploughman's, sausage & mash, burger, a vegetarian pie, ham egg & chips, etc., and these were mostly priced around the £10 - £12 mark. My fish & chips was a decent and tasty dish, although perhaps a little on the small side for it’s £11.95 price tag.
Beers on tap were Young’s Special along with Gem and Summer Hare from Bath Ales. Ciders were well represented with Thatcher’s Gold, Addlestones, Cheddar Valley and their own White Hart cider. All in all I thought this was a great pub and well worth taking the effort to find.
