Just across the river from central Reading and near Christchurch Meadows, this hip, modern pub occupies a two-room space, with the main bar on the left upon entry. The room has bare wooden floors, dark painted walls, and bright red fox motifs throughout. The bar has a wood-panelled counter, tiled bar back, and a row of framed brewery posters above the canopy. A couple of large TV screens list the full beer range. Tables line the left wall, with more casual seating at the back, including a fireplace with matching tiling to the bar. Walls are covered with art prints, breweriana, and CAMRA certificates. A second room lies to the right of the entrance but wasn’t explored on this visit. A great soundtrack and smart, modern decor complete the picture.
A standout range of beers was on offer, with five cask ales including Stardust Easy Pale and English Bitter, Fyne Jarl, Elusive Oregon Trail, and Iron Pier Perry Street Pale, plus a Gingerbread Stout of unknown origin and fourteen keg lines including gluten-free options. There were also four boxed ciders. I only had time for a swift pint sadly, opting for the Easy pale which was in very good condition, and served by one of the enthusiastic and helpful bar team. The place had a lively, warm buzz without being packed.
This place is clearly the stand out pub in Caversham and well worth the detour over the river to add to any crawl around Reading too. I was impressed with the warm, comfortable environs, friendly staff and of course, the excellent beer which ticked the quality and variety boxes sufficiently. I've no idea why I have never made it to this place before, but it's firmly on my radar now and I will look forward to a return visit when I'm next in town.

I was surprised to hear the squirt of a sparkler at this popular Caversham local. Quality beer all round with 5 of the 6 pumps pouring (or squirting), with the sixth one coming online later; this is capped by 8 premier division keg taps. The pub was absolutely buzzing on a Friday evening, with the outside seating proving sufficiently popular to leave a few tables free inside.
The Fox & Hounds is 20 minutes walk from Central Reading, or a short bus ride, and well worth it however you get here.

A huge covered rear seating area went up over COVID and has proved very popular, pretty much trebling capacity. A good range of well-kept cask and craftykeg offerings are the main draw here, well-worth the pleasant walk over the pedestrian footbridge from the North entrance of Reading station. Alas, the bar billiards table has gone.

There has been quite a refurb over the summer and the interior is now more modern and metropolitan in look. It may put some off but I think it's quite well done (and some sort of overhaul was desperately required). The beer range and quality remains first class, as so the Sunday roasts which are the best in RG1/RG4 for my money. The opening of the pedestrian footbridge across the Thames from the new north entrance to Reading BR has also been a boon. It's a Reading essential and Caversham's top dog.

Doing well here, up to six ales on the go plus some ciders with an emphasis on quality (Dark Star) and local sourcing (WEBREW, Two Cocks, Rebellion etc) with some interesting bottles in the fridge. Beer quality is generally high. The interior is now a lot tidier and there are quite a few people. The owners are really nice people too. Shows the football/rugby so a good spot to catch the match with a decent pint. Beer garden been created in the car park which also has an outside telly for al fresco sporting events. Well-worth the walk from Reading BR (there's now a footbridge).
2011 UPDATE - has just been taken over by the Two Bridges Brewery people, who will be making big changes here over the next six months. Last night saw the pulling of the first ever decent pint from the lines (Two Bridges Blonde Bevvy £3) and lighting that actually allowed you to feel like it wasn't the three day week. It will soon close for a week or so to get the interior sorted. The main news is that they will have 8 handpumps (2 Two Bridges, 6 others). The place has been refurbished, so if you know how it used to be, you might be pleased at the new flooring, new clear glass in the windows (so people can see in), new decoration and the general much brighter and more comfortable ambience. "Coming soon" are Sunday lunches and Saturday breakfasts. It sounds as though it could become a destination pub.

Vague claim to fame is that Lennon and McCartney played here pre-Beatles. Otherwise this a is a drab, dark, unkempt and smelly place serving London Pride or Two Bridges. Given its got 'freehouse' on the pub sign I am amazed that they don't do more here as it has potential.
