Country pub which mainly focuses upon food. The pub sign is a Wadworth one but it's no longer owned by that brewery. We arrived shortly after opening at Sunday lunchtime to find the rather large car park to the left-hand side of the pub absolutely packed with cars. Although the bar area at the front of the pub was really quiet. So, I can only assume that everybody was in the dining room, which is to the rear right. Or perhaps they simply have a lot of staff.

We were greeted by a women who asked if she could help, despite being the wrong side of the bar. The assumption here is that all customers are here to eat. She was ready to show us to a table and seemed surprised when I asked her for a beer. There are 3 handpulls on the bar. 2 were clipped with Young's Ordinary & Ramsbury Deer Stalker. The other had a turned Timothy Taylor Landlord clip. Beavertown Neck Oil was on keg and the cider was Aspall's. My Deer Stalker was in good condition but wasn't quite to my taste. The pub still hasn't made the Good Beer Guide since 2011.

The bar has a tiled floor with a large rug at the right-hand end of the room. Walls are partly panelled and there are plenty of horse racing pictures on them, as well as above the bar. There are some bookshelves at one end and a real fire was blazing at the other. A TV in one corner was showing a Grand Prix, whilst most tables were laid out for diners. There is another cosy room with just a couple of tables off to the left. Outdoor seating comprised an undercover courtyard behind the bar (near the side entrance)and a small garden area to the left of the pub. From the review below, it sounds like I missed a larger area to the rear. A fair amount of accommodation is also available.

Not much change here in the intervening three years (it doesn’t feel that long, I must be getting old). Three on - Ramsbury Gold, a house beer of unknown provenance and Marstons Pedigree. We sat in the upmarket paved rear garden, which was a very pleasant way to imbibe a super pint. Maybe I got lucky, but if this is the norm then they’re worth a shout for the Good Beer Guide.

Lots of money spent on this one recently and it’s mainly an eatery with a bar. Lots of blandly painted wood, jockey ephemera, papers and real fire. Though the bogs were leaking. Bar area had a nice glass gantry. On cask were Upham Tipster, Two Cocks Leveller and Ramsbury Gold (good nick). Packed on our visit with diners, in fact we had to stand, so they must be doing something right in the kitchen. Not really a drinking destination but you could do worse. Rated 6
