A prominent and imposing looking pub in the centre of Cookham’s small High Street, it’s a good size internally, with a number of rooms along the front and extending some way back towards the rear, although the rear part did look to be very much geared up for dining with a “Please wait here to be seated” lectern in the entranceway.
Décor wise it’s reasonably traditional, although it’s clearly had a bit of a makeover and now has a more elegant feel to it as opposed to any olde worlde charm. Flooring is mostly dark, polished wooden boards along with some nondescript taupe carpet in places, whilst most of the ceilings has a few wooden beams interspersed with embossed wallpaper. The walls were mostly painted khaki green, with either dark blue wood panelling on the lower part, or higher, unpainted polished wood. It all felt very genteel, but lacked much in the way of any real character, I thought. One of the snugs at the front was a little cosier perhaps, with a large exposed brick chimney breast, wood burning stove and a number of comfy arm chairs. A large TV stuck up in the corner detracted from the ambience somewhat, but fortunately this was not in use. A chess board set in an archway with seats either side was an interesting feature, and there were a couple more board games stacked on a shelf.
Beers on tap were a slightly unimaginative Doom Bar and London Pride, whilst a further pump appeared unused. Ciders fared no better with Aspall’s being the only option.

Immaculate C17th coaching house. Multiple rooms, roaring fires, friendly bar staff and manager.
It was the Rebellion Brewery signage outside this freehouse that tempted me in. The IPA was in superb condition. £4.40.

An old hotel still with a multi room layout and even with bench seating in the front bar, there's a little sitting room down a step beyond it. The other rooms are generally for dining apart from a vertical drinking area near the counter, which is equipped with a cask for a table and a few high stools. Carpets throughout as this is a posh hotel with service to match, efficient and coldly impersonal from the Rosa Klebb charm school, although two middle aged women were treated with a little more respect than myself but then they'd spent more money than me. The barman was not American so not the same git that Quinno had.
