Grubby-looking exterior but the two-tiered cosy inside is a much better affair, a real pubman’s place and a look at the cask line-up made me salivate - nine on over 10 including Old Tom, Sarah Hughes, Titanic and 4x Oakham which means it’s a GBG shoo-in. Initially took the middle ground with the Cherry Porter, which was in great shape (NBSS 4). And followed-up with an Old Tom (3). Enjoyed the free sideshow of the Xmas decorations going up, it was like witnessing a military operation undertaken by the Chuckle Brothers. I thought this one was a belter – a proper destination venue for a session.

Blue Scrumpy left this review about The Borough Arms

The Borough Arms is a classic town boozer and is certainly one of the best pubs in Crewe. It's been almost 7 years since my last visit, but little has changed. It's a cosy, small and busy place with an inverted L-shaped bar and a side room. The bar has a selection of keg (as well as Old Rosie cider) on one side and an impressive line-up of 10 handpulls on the other side.

The cask selection on our visit was Fyne Ales Jarl, Oakham Inferno, Weetwood Jester IPA & Old Dog, Salopian Voodoo & Port In A Storm, Thornbridge Jaipur, White Swan & Market Porter & Marston's Wainwright. It was good to see all 10 handpulls clipped.

Service was efficient without being over-friendly. With no seats, we were left with some rather awkward standing space alongside a narrow shelf. A couple of our party indulged in the popular ham salad rolls being brought out and placed on the bar. They looked inviting, apart from a touch too much salad for my liking!

I think it's a toss up between this place and Hops for the best pub/bar in Crewe. I hope to try Hops next time I'm in the town to see which one is the best these days.

The entrance to the Borough Arms is faced by a bar that is lined with craft and premium keg fonts. To the right is a small seating area and to the left some steps lead up to more seating and a second section of bar that supports ten handpumps, all of which were in operation during my visit just after midday on Saturday. Also in this raised seating area are some stairs that lead down to a lounge and advertised beer garden. The ceiling of the pub is completely covered in old pumps clips and the walls are adorned with framed old beer advertisements, with a few etched mirrors thrown in for good measure. My visit was not long after the pub had opened, but a handful of locals had already found their way in. There was no background music and the TV on the wall was off, I imagine it is saved for rugby! The service was polite and this was certainly the best pub for real ale that I visited during my crawl.
