The Old Yard is a Spanish and Greek taverna that I visited on a recent midweek evening. I was considering having something to eat, but most tapas were over £10 per dish and the slightly pushy barman/waiter explained that three dishes would be required to make a full meal. I don’t mind paying these prices if I’m out with the misses, but when I’m after some sustenance to power through the last few pubs, I’m looking for cheap carbs, like a chicken burger. I had a decent pint of Bradfield Brewery’s Farmers Blonde, there were another couple of hand pumps, but I didn’t note the options. I sat at a high table in the front right adjacent to the tile floored counter that runs up the right-hand wall. The larger left and rear seating areas looked to be more for dining. Located upstairs is the Bouzouki Bar that is available for hire. I’d certainly visit here again for a planned meal, but the service must be more chilled for me to consider popping in just for a beer because I felt a bit hunted and really didn’t enjoy this visit.

It is indeed a taverna restaurant but there's a bar at the front with three cask, though nothing to startle the horses. My Bradfield Farmer's Blonde was fine (NBSS 3). Decor is part-Spanish (restaurant) part-trad pub (bar area) and said bar area really has minimal seating for imbibing. It's a GBG oddity; I wouldn't see the need to re-do it unless I wanted food. That said, it was very busy on a Thursday night.

Despite the tapas bar name and odd bits of Spanish decoration this isn't a bad pub. It has two separate side with their own bars but only one was in use at time of visit. There is a large outdoor area on the pavement. A good range of beers included Pennine North 2 South, St Austell Proper Job, Graphite Black IPA, Ringwood 49er and John Smiths Cask, plus a few fizzy craft.
