A very successful tourist honeypot. So successful indeed that Robinsons have sold them the pub across the road, unable to compete. Not being a fan of pub food, this place has never floated my boat, and I'm not a fan of the beer brewed in the on-site microbrewery either. The original beer was called Ermmm, a witticism with a half-life of two nanoseconds, and they followed this up with Termmm-inator. Their Brown Bitter is like Doom Bar with the hops left out. The only one I like is the Dark Mild, which at 6% will have you under the table before you notice that you've drunk two pints of it. On my most recent visits to the two pubs, it was available in the Screes but not in the Strands. Nuff said.

Pub and hotel with micro-brewery at the rear is how I would describe this place. Inside there is one main room, with hops adorning the ceiling beams around the bar, and a small games room with a pool table and table football.
The usual tap beer/lager plus their own ales on handpull which included Strands Brewery Termmm-inator, Angry Bee, Red Screes (a decent pint), Ermmm and Brown Bitter.
It was busy on Sunday lunchtime and appeared to be winning the battle with the Screes across the road for punters in Nether Wasdale. Sunday lunch was good food and good value at £9.95 for 2 courses. Staff were friendly and helpful with some local directions.

A fantastic pub and micro brewery. Situated close to Wast Water it is an ideal base for walkers. There are several comfortable rooms which are well appoint and not too expensive, but best of all is the beer from the 'Strands Brewery' at the back of the hotel. They make about 15 different types of beer and generally have at least 5 beers on at any time. The beers we tried we all agreed were superb, as is the food there and I would go as far to say that the beer I sampled was the best pint I have tasted this year. This is a MUST if you are in the area!!!
