A good looking pub in a most attractive part of town, the Rifleman has been opened out quite a bit, but still provides a feeling of separate areas in front of the long central bar. (Another room to the left of the bar was not being used when I was here.)
There are five hand pumps (see photo) and the Bootleg Urban Fox that I drank was in very good nick. To be honest, the beer range struck me as being a little unimaginative and mainstream, It would be nice to see something from Cumbria, for example. Are Kendal people really crying out for the chance to drink Marstons EPA and Greene King Abbot Ale?
There was a good crowd in at the time of my visit, but it was quiz night. This would be a good place to adopt as a local, in the unlikely event of finding oneself living in Kendal. Mind you, I can see myself being barred for pestering the landlord once too often about stocking Marstons EPA.
