Hotel with rather spartan hikers bar around the back. Church pew style seating along a back wall, a couple of tables and two comfy seats in front of a roaring log burner. Two real ales on - I chose Loweswater Gold and in perfect nick. Opens at 11am, food from midday. Cakes on the bar. Decent enough and very handy for amazing walks to Slaters Bridge and Cathedral Cavern.

A winter visit finds just one cask beer on, with one pump clip turned around and three hand pumps totally naked. My Swan Black from local Bowness Bay brewery was very good (NBSS 3.5). There was also the keg version of the same brewery's Steamer IPA plus Lakes Lager. I was also here in early March when three beers were available, so it looks like I picked a particularly quiet day this time. It's a 30 minute walk from the bus stop in Elterwater (outside the Brtannia Inn) and there's a further walk of about 90 minutes from here to the Black Bull in Coniston. Not the easiest of pub crawls, but worth the effort.

Splendid stone-built country pub at foot of hairy pass over mountains - handy for restorative brandy on way down. One large bar room, with restaurant area to front, perhaps a bit too neatly rebuilt for much character but friendly welcome. Excellent selection of local ales, including best kept pint of the day. Food sounded above average, which with the large range of malt whisky made the 10 bedrooms sound appealing. Recommended.
