Will Larter left this review about The Coach House Inn
I cycled here on a gloomy afternoon to find out what this pub was like, rather than resting comfortably in Alston, as I was reminding myself I could have done as the drizzle started. On entering the pub, which faces the road and is a wing of the larger house, Nent Hall itself, I felt like I'd walked into a scene from Brideshead Revisited, as the existing customers were all young men with public school accents and attitudes, dressed in what I assume was some sort of hunting, fishing or shooting garb. The pub itself is set out mostly for dining, though I suppose no one would object to anyone taking their beer to one of the dining tables. There's an open fire to the left of the smallish bar, with a couple of small armchairs nearby, and I went and sat there while I drank my half of Allendale Wagtail, the only beer available on the two hand pumps. Fortunately this is much more to my taste than their Golden Plover which I'd had on my way here, and was in good condition. This is a pleasant room with a stone floor and a dark wood bar with a few stools next to it. I can imagine coming here if staying at any of the holiday accommodation in this valley, preferably with a few friends so that we could laugh at the ridiculous socks those young men were wearing.
