A pleasant roadside inn just before the bridge and with a bus stop on the edge of the car park. I mention this because I was using the 442 Buxton to Ashbourne shuttle service to visit a few out of the way pubs, and this was one. There are rooms in the inn and in an annexe, and a caravan and camping site opposite, so I guess it can get busy in summer. There's a beer garden with bench seats set under some pleasant trees in the corner of a field next to the car park. A few people were calling in for late afternoon drinks or to book in for their weekend stay when I was here. The room near the bar has the informal look of an old village pub, with the addition of a solid fuel stove, but there is also a formal country hotel dining room (with table cloths) and a less formal one in the conservatory-type extension.
There are five hand pumps with Pedigree, Wainwright, Old Rosie and Wincle Wibbly Wallaby 4.4% at the time of my visit. Despite misgivings about vocalising the name, I went for the WWW which was a very nice beer in good condition. Unfortunately, although I had told the bus driver on the previous leg that I would be at the pub and asked him to stop if he was passing before the advertised time, I caught a glimpse of the lit bus windows flashing past at 16:39 just as I was getting out of my chair to go and wait for its arrival at 16:42. Luckily it was not the last bus of the day, so I had another half (this time a new beer that had just gone on, Leatherbritches Ashbourne Ale 4.0%) and waited for the 17:42, which arrived on time. I wouldn't mind coming back here, though preferably when not so dependent on the whims of public transport operatives.
